VR vs a Virtual Screen: Know the Difference

Native VR, PS VR2 Cinematic Mode, Quest capture and wearable displays: check the game and the whole connection before buying.

Technology · GuideChecked By GTASpots editorial team

A headset can show an ordinary game on a virtual screen without turning it into native VR. Verify the game’s supported mode and the complete device connection separately. Native GTA VI VR was not confirmed in the official sources checked on October 30, 2026.

Three experiences that look similar in a shop

ExperienceWhat you are usingWhat to verify
Native VRSoftware designed for a supported VR environment. The exact game, platform, headset and input support.
Virtual screenA rectangular 2D game or app shown inside a headset. The supported display path, sound, controls and comfort.
Wearable display / AR deviceA display driven by a host, or a device showing information over your view. The exact input protocol, host mode, power and software.

PS VR2: Cinematic Mode is a display mode

PlayStation documents that a non-VR game or media app can appear on a virtual screen in Cinematic Mode. Start the PS5 and headset, then choose a non-VR game or app. Relevant settings are under Accessories → PlayStation VR2 → Cinematic mode. The TV social screen is disabled in this mode.

This explains how ordinary content can be displayed. It does not establish a native VR version of GTA VI, head-controlled aiming, motion-controller support or a particular comfort outcome. Check the game and hardware documentation rather than extrapolating from a headset photograph.

Quest HDMI Link needs a capture path

Meta’s HDMI Link listing describes viewing 2D content from an external source. The documented chain requires a compatible UVC/UAC capture device and a suitable USB data path; a plain HDMI-to-USB-C cable is not the same setup.

Think through source → HDMI cable → supported capture input → USB data connection → compatible Quest headset and HDMI Link app. Confirm video and audio formats, required power and any passthrough with the exact capture-card documentation. We have not verified a specific card here and do not sell an assumed adapter bundle.

120 Hz is not a promise of 120 FPS

Refresh rate describes how often a display can update. Game frame rate describes how many frames the game renders. A 120 Hz mode can exist without a particular game delivering 120 distinct frames each second. Hardware, game settings, supported output modes and the connection all matter.

PlayStation documents optional 120 Hz cinematic output. That is an output capability, not a GTA VI benchmark. A PC monitor’s maximum over DisplayPort should also not be advertised as the console frame rate. We avoid unverified latency and resolution claims for capture setups.

USB-C shape is not compatibility

For display glasses, ask whether the host actually provides the required video protocol and power, and whether the receiving device accepts it. Then check sound and controls. A connector fitting into a socket proves only that it fits.

For AR, ask what is actually overlaid, which applications supply it and whether tracking is available in the scenario you want. “AR glasses” can describe very different products. Start with the desired experience instead of treating the label as a feature checklist.

Check the full chain

  • Name the game, source device, intended mode and exact headset or display.
  • Confirm native software support separately from ordinary video input.
  • List every required cable, adapter, capture device and power supply.
  • Check sound and controller paths as well as the picture.
  • Review comfort, fit and returns with the seller. Do not buy for an unannounced GTA VI feature.
