GTA 5 PC Mods: Versions, Setup and Clean Removal

A cautious workflow for GTA V Legacy and Enhanced: check the author, dependencies, current rules and rollback before installing a Story Mode modification.

GTA V · Story ModeChecked By GTASpots editorial team

GTA V PC mod compatibility depends on Legacy or Enhanced, the exact game build and each dependency. Read Rockstar’s current rules and the original author’s instructions first. This guide does not host files or recommend a mod for official GTA Online.

Permission and technical compatibility are separate

Rockstar’s current Story Mode mods support page directs readers to the current Mod Guidelines and underlying terms. “Free” does not mean that every use is permitted. Do not assume an old summary still describes the current policy.

A tool may load successfully without being approved by Rockstar. We list an original author’s documentation to explain a concrete file-based workflow, not to certify a mod, story expansion, unofficial multiplayer service or unsupported platform port.

Write down the exact version before changing a file

Identify PC Legacy or Enhanced, your launcher and the installed build number. Then check the mod and all dependencies against that edition and build. A dependency supporting Enhanced does not mean every mod built around it also supports Enhanced.

Alexander Blade documents Enhanced support for Script Hook V and warns that individual mods may need their own updates. Treat that as a compatibility question for each project. If a new game patch is outside the supported list, stop and wait for the author’s documented update rather than forcing a mismatched binary.

Make the change reversible

  • Start with a clean, working Story Mode installation. Close the game and launcher.
  • Back up saves and every file that will be replaced outside the installation directory.
  • Read the original author page, version history and dependency instructions; do not substitute a re-upload.
  • Make a manifest of each added filename, original location, source version and, when available, hash.
  • Apply one documented, permitted change at a time so a failure can be traced.

A concrete documentation example: Script Hook V

For a compatible build, the original author describes ScriptHookV.dll in the directory containing the game executable, with dinput8.dll as the accompanying ASI loader. The optional NativeTrainer is a separate component. This is the documented structure of that tool, not a universal recipe for every mod or a recommendation to install all bundled plugins.

Only follow a project’s actual installation instructions after checking its permission and exact compatibility. Do not download or run an executable just because another guide uses the same filenames. The author says Script Hook V does not work in GTA Online; keep official Online separate.

Return to a clean installation

Close the game and launcher. Remove only added files identified in your manifest from the game directory. Restore original files you replaced, then use the launcher’s integrity verification. In Rockstar Games Launcher the documented route is Settings → My installed games → selected game → Verify Integrity.

Verification can repair official files; it does not prove that every additional third-party file has been removed. Do not delete similarly named Windows system DLLs. Test clean Story Mode, then confirm current anti-cheat requirements before official GTA Online. If the file history is uncertain, use a clean reinstall or official support rather than guessing.

Keep the contexts distinct

A single-player GTA V modification, a licensed Creator Platform experience and official GTA Online are different environments. This guide makes no claim about GTA VI tooling or console mod support. Our GTA VI mods page records that separate evidence status.

We have not run a mod or tested hardware for this article. It is a source-based workflow with a clear stop condition: an unsupported build, unclear permission or missing rollback instructions means the installation is not ready.
